Cleaning
If you would like cleaning during your stay, we can provide an excellent cleaner at a cost of £40 per two hours on weekdays, £50 at weekends.

Because Pekes is a popular place to hold Celebrations of many sorts, we know and can suggest a range of local caterers, who almost all will do anything from quite small dinner parties up to major entertainments.

Great Bread

Fish
Of course all of our seaside towns sell fresh fish straight from the sea. Specially recommended are: Bickerstaff Fishing, Riverside North, West Quay Newhaven (on the river bank about opposite the ferry terminal, own parking). Best prices often late Friday or Saturday. Also Paul’s Plaice, Dane Road, Seaford (nearly opposite Morrison’s Supermarket). Small but good.
Two further-off fishmongers which are well worth a visit are: RX Fisheries on the famous Rock-a-Nore Road near the beach fleet at Hastings and Brighton & Newhaven Fish Sales on Shoreham harbour, who have their own boats.

Local Shopping
Chiddingly Village Shop stocks lots of local and delicious things, as well as being a café with Wi-Fi. It’s just up the road on the left in Muddles Green on the way to Chiddingly village. Look out for the tasty Golden Cross and Flower Marie goats cheeses produced at Holmes Hill just up the A22.

The BP station at Golden Cross (just up the A22) has a Spar which stocks food essentials, drinks and newspapers.
Deanland Stores at Deanland Wood Park is a convenience store that is open every day (A22 north, turn left at Golden Cross and follow the sign for Ripe; Deanland is on the left after about 1 mile).
Ripe Village Stores at Ripe – go on past Deanland to centre of the village. Another great and entrepreneurial Community Shop with café, delicious home-cooked meals, deli, drinks, fresh fish and meat and a Post Office (open until 1 pm). Full English on Saturdays from 9 am to 1.

The nearest ATM is at BP on the A22.
Lloyds, Barclays & Nationwide have branches with ATMs in Hailsham (all end of the High Street), so also do Tesco & Waitrose.
Local Pubs
The Six Bells Inn in Chiddingly village is a well-known independent, attractive and lively pub which also serves food for all budgets. They regularly have jazz and blues bands. Just over 1 mile from Pekes, through Muddles Green and straight on.

The Gun at Gun Hill is an old atmospheric Real Ale pub with an excellent dining room and garden with play area overlooking farm fields. About 1 mile from Pekes, turn right at the end of the drive. Advise reserving a table & driving there (narrow lane).

The Plough at Upper Dicker. A charming gastro pub, for anything from a pub lunch to bistro bar to restaurant. Very nice large drinking or eating out garden at the back with a play area. The Roebuck at Laughton. A well-known pub serving mostly Sussex beers and good local food. ‘Quirky’ with a welcoming atmosphere. 3.5 miles from Pekes – up the A22, turn left after the BP station towards Lewes, and about 3 miles along there is the yellow pub on the right hand side.

- Royal Indian, South Road, Hailsham. Royal Indian Hailsham. Perhaps Hailsham’s best Indian food, Tandoori a speciality. Also Takeaways.
- Weatherspoon’s at The George Hotel, George Street, Hailsham.The George Hotel. All day pub and family eatery, good and very reasonable breakfasts, etc. Outside area. Bottom of the High Street, turn right on George Street, and it’s on the left. For parking go down George Street, turn right into North Street, and it’s on the right.
- Callendars, 80 High Street, Hailsham.Callenders Restaurant. A standard fairly reasonable bistro type restaurant offering English/British food. Opposite The Grenadier Pub. Parking a bit difficult, but go on, take the 1st left, bear right and it’s on the right.
ALFRISTON
- The Star, High Street. A really ancient and atmospheric pilgrim hostel and smugglers inn, it was purchased by Olga Polizzi, the renowned boutique hotelier with her daughter Alex (The Hotel Inspector) in 2019, and underwent a total rebuild and refurb. It iis now without doubt the best and most delicious place to eat in the area, with a restaurant that is exceptional in every way (and not too alarmingly expensive). Has its own parking for guests. The Star, Alfriston.
- Poco, High Street. A genuine family-run really excellent Italian restaurant, using traditional methods and almost exclusively local fresh ingredients. Huge selection of wines and beers, some of them exclusive to Poco. Full of cosy bustle (not for a romantic candlelight dinner). Closed Mondays & Tuesdays. Excellent Sunday roast Italian style. Poco Italian Restaurant.
- Ye Olde Smugglers Inne, Waterloo Square (the centre). Very historical traditional pub with good food. Beer garden, dog friendly. CAMRA best-kept beer listing. Smugglers Alfriston.
- The George Inn, High Street. Medieval timbered pub, very snug. Good food, beer garden and dog friendly. The George Alfriston.
- The Cricketers Arms, Berwick. About 1 mile from Alfriston, just off the A27 west. A charming country pub in a very small village, with a lovely peaceful garden under the Downs. Excellent food. The Cricketers Berwick.
- The Sussex Ox, Milton Street. Also about 1 mile from Alfriston, off the A27 east. A well-known gastro pub, excellent fresh food, charming bar and huge walled garden with lovely views. Footpath from there to view the mysterious Wilmington Old Man. The Sussex Ox.
- The Plough and Harrow, Litlington. About 1.5 miles from Alfriston, towards the sea. A charming higgledy piggledy old place, with real ales and Long Man beer brewed in the village. Good for lunched and a walk – Friston Forest, Lullington Heath or downriver to the sea. The Plough & Harrow.
LEWES
- Aqua – The Old Courthouse (near Waitrose). Trendy new restaurant, excellent fresh food, early supper deal. Aqua Restaurant.
- Depot. Trendy and friendly café-bar and restaurant within the lovely Depot cinema complex. The right place if you are going to a film, but good at any time.The Depot.
- The Lewes Arms, quite near the High Street. A historic pub with a huge array of beers and drinks, and good food. With a small garden. The Lewes Arms.

- Jasmine Garden, 7 High Street, Hailsham. Jasmine Garden Hailsham. A long established good Chinese takeaway with a large menu. On the right near the bottom of Hailsham High Street, and right next door to Hailsham Cellars – a first class wine and spirits outlet.
- Wok Inn, Shortgate near Laughton. The Wok Inn. A nice long-established authentic Chinese restaurant that does take-aways. Go up the A22 north, turn left at Halland towards Ringmer, and it’s about a mile on the left at a small place called Shortgate.
- Domino’s Pizza, Hailsham. 32 High Street, Hailsham. 01323 848000. Near the top of the High Street.
- John’s Fish & Chips. 66 High Street, Hailsham. John’s Fish & Chips. There are several Fish & Chips outlets in Hailsham, but we think this is the best. Award winning. Usually open until 10 pm. Top of the High Street, on the left.
